History:

Death: At the end of season 1, the gang realizes the dean is trying to raise a deep one and when Laura goes on a suicide mission to try and stop it, Carmilla goes after her wielding a sword powerful enough to kill anything. She succeeds but the fine print on the magic sword is that it kills you for using it. Carmilla was aware of this fact when she wielded it, but she did think the death involved would be a lot different than winding up in haunted permadark Maine.

What are your plans for this character in-game? The series itself plays a lot with what kind of character Carmilla is. Laura often refers to her as a monster, and well, she's not exactly a great person. Still, as much as she can be pushed to monstrosity, she's far from evil. She's self hating and self serving, and it would be great to put her on a journey that lets her be more at peace with who she is and just giving a shit about others, which she is mildly against at present.

What aspects of this game and/or its setting are you most interested in having this character engage with? I'm not sure it's an aspect of the game so much as just seeing how this character gets on in a team environment. She's not a team player and she usually refuses to be helpful until she gets emotional investment in someone or something. Pushing her past that knee-jerk selfishness would be fascinating, though a bit of a tall order at the same time. Also, i'm just interested in having a different personality to play with than Matt.

How does your character generally get along with other people? Carmilla can get along if she wants to, it's just the wanting to part. She is generally nicer when she needs something. She's wry and sarcastic and too sardonic for her own good. Generally that turns people off, and she's fine with that. Pushing her to extremes can be a little dangerous, because she has killed before and could be pushed to do so again. That said as much as she might threaten to cut a bloody swath through town, it takes a hell of a lot to get her there.

What is your character's mental state upon entering the game? Well, the nicest way to put it is she's annoyed. She was kinda looking forward to just actually being dead. She was mildly tired of living and as far as she's concerned, being in Beacon blows compared to relatively calm nonexistence, since staying with Laura was apparently not an option. She is not particularly interested in saving this world, even if it needs saving. After all, the last time she tried that, she ended up here. If she's stuck in a loop of terrible afterlifes, she's not interested in seeing the next iteration.

Skills/Abilities:
vampirism. Carmilla is an old vampire, and that affords her some of the usual vampire skills. Super strength, super speed, super reflexes, you know the drill. she heals quickly if she's well fed, and the fed in this instance is blood (though she does still enjoy food, chocolate especially). She is more resistant to damage and is stated that she will survive most anything unless she loses her heart or her head. she has no weakness to garlic or sunlight, like some vampires, though she is burned by genuine holy water, as in properly blessed. She's fine with crosses, as she wears one sometimes for her goth aesthetic and remains unphased. She does not need to be invited in to enter a residence.
suggestion. For those particularly feeble of mind, Carmilla is able to persuade them towards her wishes. For example, she convinced someone she attacked that he didn't need to be upset about it, and then he wasn't. It requires the low hypnotic voice and eye contact, and it doesn't always work. She doesn't seem to use it much, and only on less-than-intelligent individuals, so it's likely it isn't effective on stronger willed people. I don't intend to use this much since Carmilla used it like twice in canon, it's clearly not her sorta thing. She usually just does the bad bullshit and lets people be mad about it. That said, if it ever did come up, it'd only be with explicit permission!
dream influence. Anyone who sleeps around her is prone to having nightmares. Carmilla has no real control over this and it doesn't even indicate she has foul intent, it just happens. It seems to be something sprung from the original book. The dreams are usually about drowning in blood or giant cat monsters. Dreamcatchers seem to more or less prevent these, or the show forgot about it past s1. ANYWAY,
cat monster. Speaking of cat monsters, she can turn into a cat monster. Think panther. Big enough to drag jocks across the quad in her jaws. This is apparently from the original novella, so, that's something.
teleportation. She can poof around in black smoke. She can't teleport anyone else, just herself. Range is not clearly stated canonically, but I know this is a nerf ability in beacon so I am fine with whatever limitation you want on this one!
pyrokinesis. She usually uses this to light candles to mood light her brooding, but she also set a huge leather book on fire. That said I know this is a nerf ability in Beacon and that she can't make anything burn and any fire she makes will not produce light, so it's sort of a ... nonstarter. (sorry for that pun.)
psionic scream. Vampires of a certain age in Carmilla's canon have the ability to let out a psionic scream, which disorients or knocks out others. That said, she's young enough that she has no control over this ability and more or less it hurts people's ears when she is especially upset.
non-vampire stuff. She is an old vampire, and especially well read. She is familiar with many languages, many of them dead, and some of them not. She's lived through a lot and knows a lot of history.


Flaws/Weaknesses: The obvious weakness is that she needs blood to survive. Carmilla has been shown to have a lot of self control and has never attacked someone on accident. However she gets very cranky when she hasn't fed recently, and can have a seizure or go completely unresponsive if she goes too long without any. She's also weak to other things vampires are susceptible to — holy water, a well placed stake. She won't be able to heal if she isn't well fed.

Her more notable weaknesses are in personality. Her age and experience makes her very unimpressed with humanity. It is hard to motivate her to care about things. She is very selfish. She doesn't place a lot of value in a human life and will kill if she has to. She's a nihilist and has little respect for most people she meets. She is apathetic, rude, and often cruel. She can grow extremely devoted and attached to one person or thing and become extremely dependent on it. One might say entirely too dependent.

Last, some fears include: claustrophobia (she was trapped in a coffin of blood for a few decades), death, rejection, being alone, guilt, past coming back to haunt her, and just good ol' emotional vulnerability!!!

Personality: Age inspires indifference. Carmilla plays at a dismissive, disinterested girl, and she plays at it quite convincingly. She seems inspired most by hedonism, and failing that what sparks her interest at the time. She's a selfish creature and spares little thought to those around her unless they can be of use to her. She's mean and she's unsympathetic, unless it serves her. Which is not to say she's entirely without her charms. Carmilla is charming, smart and witty, and she uses all of these facets to engage when she wants to. Sometimes it's well intentioned, sometimes it's because she needs something. Either way there's usually a disconnect between most of her interactions and what she really feels.

That said, her act of disinterest isn't a perfect facade. Occasionally something strikes her, breaks past the indifference. Honestly it happens more than Carmilla cares to admit. She is a romantic with her bleeding heart scarred over with age, yet it is far from desiccated. She still finds something to admire in innocence, even if hers disappeared a long time ago. Carmilla can find figments of humanity that she is engaged by and when that happens she tends to show a more true version of herself. One that can be affectionate, one that can be playful, one that can be thoughtful and kind. It isn't a side she shows to just anyone, and often her own removal from truly connecting with others is a perfect way for her to avoid getting close enough to care.

When she does? She does intensely, with her entire self. Be it the endearing qualities, like subtle shows of affection, genuine thought and interest in the other's life or concern and worry for their health, or the less-than-endearing ones, like her willingness to do anything to protect them. Because in the end, that violent and vicious side of her exists. She often references it as a threat, and sometimes it seems just like that. It is important to not forget she's more than capable of any shade of violence she decides will help her, silence her pain, or protect those that matter to her. She's not above feeling guilty about it after, because she knows it's wrong. Still, it's too late to pretend she doesn't already have blood on her hands. what is a little more, in the scope of things?

I'm fine with that being nerfed in whatever way you please, but it does come with the stipulation that it'll kill you for using it.

    PHYSICAL AFFECTION: Depends on the mood she's in, but generally she can run with it. In a good mood and with people she likes she's fairly handsy herself.

    PHYSICAL VIOLENCE: Go for it, but let's communicate, since she is fairly strong.

    ROMANCE/FLIRTING: She's probably not interested at the moment, but I am not ruling it out. As for flirting, definitely. She strongly prefers females for romantic interaction, though she’ll flirt with guys if she feels like it.

She has shown not to be weak to the supposed classics like sunlight and garlic, however she's far from invincible. It is just that she'll probably survive any damage done to her unless her heart and head are removed from her body. Sleeping around her can cause nightmares of impending death, even if she doesn't have any ill intent towards someone (this is entirely out of her control, it just happens). She can transform into a giant cat monster, think jaguar. That shit might be weird but it's from the original novel so I guess that's a thing.

    MEDICAL INFORMATION: She's dead Jim. Carmilla needs to feed on human blood to survive, though she can happily eat food if she feels inclined to. She enjoys chocolate especially.

    NEGATIVE TRAITS.
    1. — SELFISHNESS. Carmilla is an incredibly selfish creature. She shows this in all sorts of ways, banal ones like stealing her roommates' pillow and snacks, and making out with other girls on Laura's bed because it's closer to the door and therefore faster and easier. It's also exemplified in darker ways, like her refusal to help stop her mother because she doesn't want to put herself at risk or agreeing to stay out of her mother's plot when Lilita tells her she can keep Laura if she behaves. Carmilla usually makes choices on how they affect her and what she gets out of them. If it doesn't serve her or what she wants, she's not interested.

    2. — CALLOUS. She's not a particularly nice girl, to most people. She openly mocks all of Laura's friends, calling them insulting things like dimwits and making fun of their habits. Carmilla whistles the X-Files theme song in the midst of a girl retelling a recent traumatic event, and even mocks that trauma to Laura after they leave. She is openly hostile when she's in a bad mood and will use excessive force on humans when she's angry (knocking Kirch over, choking Danny), and doesn't seem particularly cowed by the reality her actions upset and hurt others.

    3. — DETACHED. After living for so long, Carmilla has become incredibly detached from humanity. She presents as someone that does not care when people get hurt or die. She tells Laura frequently that she's not interested in her missing roommate. Later on, she also states she does not care to help them fight back against her mother. This is more or less a means of self-preservation. She has a flat affect and is hard to inspire interest in, and she avoids responsibility as well as getting engaged in causes outside of herself. She avoids getting close to people and pushes them away actively because she would rather not be in the position of caring about someone.

    POSITIVE TRAITS.
    1. — PROTECTIVE. While it takes a great deal for Carmilla to form attachments, when she does? Oh boy. She's willing to sacrifice others to protect them, whether they like it or not. Like, say, the five girls her mother intended to sacrifice, if she got to keep Laura. She's willing to do anything to protect who she cares about, in fact, whether they like it or not. In fact, she even chose fought her mother and used even intentionally wielded a magic sword that could kill anything at the cost of the life of the user to protect Laura. Which means she was willing to give up a 300 year old life, something she's guarded rather zealously, for the person she wanted to protect. While she will go to the ends of the earth for those that she cares about, it is rather difficult to earn her loyalty.

    🌖 FIRST IMPRESSIONS (OPTIONAL)


    🌙 VISUAL: Carmilla presents much taller than she actually is, through presence and confidence. In actuality, she's only 5'3 and all around pretty small. She has dark black-brown hair, amazing eyebrows, and usually is spotted with black nails and dark liner. She usually wears her hair curled, even in Erku. Look, she was born in a time curling irons didn't even exist, she's totally fine curling her hair heatless.
    🌙 FASHION: She's a little all over the place with her fashion, anywhere from punk to goth to straight lazy. She'll wear whatever she's feeling like at the time. She has a fondness for see-through lace and leather. The biggest consistency is that she seems to hate color and mostly wears black. I have a style board for her here. Some visual references here.
    🌙 DEMEANOR: It truly depends on who she is talking to and what she wants out of the interaction. She can be charming and endearing, she can be a raging asshole with barely disguised disgust. In general, she seems languid and lazy in her movements, maybe even cat-like. Her mood can change quickly and she can fall from one act to another rather abruptly. Mostly she presents as disinterested and disaffected, bored as one can possibly be.
    🌙 SOUND: She usually has a low, lazy drawl. It can occasionally be a little more flirty, when she wants to. It isn't often that she actually cares enough to be visibly annoyed, but when she is her tone is much louder and more emotive. A vid example here! Important to note, she doesn't have a heartbeat. Those with especially good hearing will notice that.
    🌙 SCENT: She smells good. She's always clean, even in Erku. Once access to perfume is available, she's definitely going to find something dark and earthy and she'll douse herself in that. People who are especially gifted in the smell department might note she smells very distantly of dry blood and death. Very sexy.

    🌙 MENTAL ABILITIES/DEFENSES: She has no defenses against this but if she finds out might try to murder even the most well-meaning of characters so uh... let's def chat if we wanna go this route.
    🌙 MAGICAL ABILITIES/DEFENSES: Carmilla has the basic range of vampire abilities, super strength, super speed, fast healing when well-fed. She is able to manipulate weak minds with mild compulsion, though she's never seen to be able to do this with... shall we say, particularly intelligent people. She has pyrokinetic abilities, mostly used to light candles or books she really doesn't like on fire. She also can teleport in puffs of black smoke. Vampires in Carmilla's canon get a super-sonic shriek ability as they age, that said, she's still young enough that hers only seems to register when she's extremely emotional (she can't use it on command). She has shown not to be weak to the supposed classics like sunlight and garlic, however she's far from invincible. It is just that she'll probably survive any damage done to her unless her heart and head are removed from her body. Sleeping around her can cause nightmares of impending death, even if she doesn't have any ill intent towards someone (this is entirely out of her control, it just happens). She can transform into a giant cat monster, think jaguar. It might be weird but it's from the original novel so, uh, why not right? I have a powers permission below, please check it out!
    🌙 PHYSICAL ABILITIES/DEFENSES: Like listed above, she's got super strength, super speed, and super reflexes because of being a super-old vampire. She does need to be well fed to be at her strongest, though.

    Personality: Age inspires indifference. You see the repetition of the world, the way cultures and civilizations rise and fall. How the world changes while somehow staying the same, circling back to the same place it always finds. Once you've watched the same show on repeat long enough, you get tired of the menial moving of pieces. Or, so Carmilla would like for people to believe.

    She plays at a dismissive, disinterested girl, and she plays at it quite convincingly. When in the guise of the philosophy major she seems inspired most by hedonism, and failing that what sparks her interest at the time. She's a selfish creature and spares little thought to those around her unless they can be of use to her. She's mean and she's unsympathetic, unless it serves her. She's an absolutely horrible roommate, leaving her hair in the drain and borrowing clothing items and various bits of bedding because it makes her life easier and she's not inclined to worry about anyone else.

    This is not to say she's entirely without her charms. You sort of need some to survive centuries. Carmilla is beautiful and smart and witty, and she uses all of these facets to engage when she wants to. Occasionally with a girl she's enjoying the company of, occasionally of a professor that she wants to impress, occasionally on a meal she intends to make and need to get close enough to sample. There is often an emptiness to it, though, because it's all aimed toward survival instead of a genuine place. She goes through motions because she's used to a slow rotation of faces that blend and fade with time. She doesn't expect to maintain any of her connections and perhaps does not even desire to, so why put more effort into them than she needs to?

    That said, it is an incomplete game. Occasionally a person gets through the dislike and indifference. It's rare, but it happens, more than Carmilla cares to admit. She is a romantic with her bleeding heart scarred over with age, yet it is far from desiccated. She doesn't see the need to kill if she can avoid it. She'd rather not hurt if she doesn't have to. She still finds something to admire in innocence, even if hers disappeared a long time ago. Carmilla can find figments of humanity that she is engaged by and when that happens she tends to show a more true version of herself.

    One that can be affectionate, one that can be playful, one that can be thoughtful and kind. It isn't a side she shows to just anyone, and often her own removal from truly connecting with others is a perfect way for her to avoid getting close enough to care. However, when she does? She does intensely, with her entire self. Be it the endearing qualities, like subtle shows of affection, genuine thought and interest in the other's life or concern and worry for their health, or the less-than-endearing ones, like her willingness to hurt and maim and even kill to protect them. Her absolute acceptance in sacrificing others to protect those that matter most.

    In the end, that violent and vicious side of her exists. She often references it as a threat, a willingness to harm or murder or hunt or anything on the spectrum, and sometimes it can seem just that, a threat. Pushed to enough extremes, though, it is far from just a frightening concept, it is a realized action. Carmilla is not incapable of murder, of violence, or any shade of violence that can help her, silence her pain, or protect those that matter to her. She'd rather avoid it, she will likely feel guilt over it after, yet she will do it if she feels she has to or if she feels she needs to.

    Not because she thinks it is right, she knows it isn't. Still, it's too late for her to pretend that she hasn't already traveled those dark and bloody paths. She has regrets for the violence and pain she's caused, but she can't erase it nor pretend it hasn't happened. Carmilla feels she's already contaminated herself, and does not have any illusions that she can come back from the lows she's hit. Even when she tries to reverse some of the damage, or when she shows how guilty she really feels for what she's done. It is too late for her to come back, and what is another life or another drop of blood on her hands when she's already drowned in it?

    Carmilla is a complicated creature. She boasts perspective many can't thanks to her age, yet it is hard to argue that she uses that perspective for anyone but herself. She is not incapable of seeing the beauty of the world — original shows in Paris, a lovely day and the sun on her skin, the connection of another person under her cold fingers — she just constantly matches it with the ugliness. She often sees existence through its flaws instead of its brightness, but when she finds a spark of something that inspires her? There is nothing she will not do to protect it.

    Powers:
    VAMPIRISM. Carmilla is an old vampire, and that affords her some of the usual vampire skills. Super strength, super speed, super reflexes, you know the drill. she heals quickly if she's well fed, and the fed in this instance is blood (though she does still enjoy food, chocolate especially). She is more resistant to damage and is stated that she will survive most anything unless she loses her heart or her head. she has no weakness to garlic or sunlight, like some vampires, though she is burned by genuine holy water, as in properly blessed. She's fine with crosses, as she wears one sometimes for her goth aesthetic and remains unfazed. She does not need to be invited in to enter a residence.
    SUGGESTION. For those particularly feeble of mind, Carmilla is able to persuade them towards her wishes. For example, she convinced someone she attacked that he didn't need to be upset about it, and then he wasn't. It requires the low hypnotic voice and eye contact, and it doesn't always work. She doesn't seem to use it much, and only on less-than-intelligent individuals, so it's likely it isn't effective on stronger willed people. I don't intend to use this much since Carmilla used it like twice in canon, it's clearly not her sorta thing. She usually just does the bad bullshit and lets people be mad about it. That said, if it ever did come up, it'd only be with explicit permission!
    DREAM INFLUENCE. Anyone who sleeps around her is prone to having nightmares. Carmilla has no real control over this and it doesn't even indicate she has foul intent, it just happens. It seems to be something sprung from the original book. The dreams are usually about drowning in blood or giant cat monsters. Dreamcatchers seem to more or less prevent these, or the show forgot about it past s1. ANYWAY,
    MONSTER FORM. Speaking of cat monsters, she can turn into a cat monster. Think panther. Big enough to drag jocks across the quad in her jaws. This is apparently from the original novella, so, that's something.
    TELEPORTATION. She can poof around in black smoke. She can't teleport anyone else, just herself. Range is not clearly stated canonically, but I know this is a nerf ability in beacon so I am fine with whatever limitation you want on this one!
    PYROKINESIS. She usually uses this to light candles to mood light her brooding, but she also set a huge leather book on fire.
    PSIONIC SCREAM. Vampires of a certain age in Carmilla's canon have the ability to let out a psionic scream, which disorients or knocks out others. That said, she's young enough that she has no control over this ability and more or less it hurts people's ears when she is especially upset.
    POTENTIAL NERFS. I don't believe any of her powers are gamebreaking. Let me know if there are any nerfs that need to be put in place! I'm happy to limit her teleportation to explored game areas/short distances. She also has opt in/out for her powers.

    WHY IS SHE LIKE THIS? A TRAUMATIC HISTORY LEXICON

    carmilla is not a sharer so it is very likely most characters she interacts with are not likely to know what she has gone through or why exactly she reacts to things the way she does. furthermore, other players might not understand what is going on, even if i try to describe it in metatext. so i put together a very short primer of trauma for your perusal to give you a better idea of why she is the way she is, and the method behind the disaster.


    born around 1680. she's been alive for a very long time, and has seen multiple wars, industrial revolutions, changes in technology, etc. she's been alive long enough to see some patterns and they're not particularly flattering ones. she sees humans as self destructive, self centered, and self interested. because of this she is not particularly gracious to strangers, and expects the worst of just about everyone.
    murdered at 18 at her own birthday ball. not a lot of details given on this one, but it was supposed to be a birthday celebration before she was forcibly married to a baron, and it did not end up that way. being murdered leaves its scars on a girl.
    turned into a vampire. this was done by a super powerful goddess trapped in a human skin suit with a lot of black magic. she's not a usual vampire, and that's likely because she was reborn, and not simply turned. she has a handful of magical abilities, including teleportation, pyrokinesis, and turning into a giant monster cat. this is on top of the normal vampire stuff of super speed, super senses, super strength, etc. she can take a great deal of injuries and still survive, though she is sensitive to holy water and well placed stakes. she would die if her head were removed.
    held as a long-term captive. the baron she was due to wed stole her from her grave, and he is perhaps responsible for asking her to be turned. he kept her in a dungeon and kept her fed, only barely, and forced her into a sexual relationship while she was held captive. this could have happened anywhere from months to years.
    murderous rampage. when she finally escaped vordenburg she intentionally murdered his entire family. oh, yeah, he was up there with a new wife procreating as he kept her in a basement. she intentionally killed everyone but the baron himself, which resulted in his family line having some fairly strong feelings against her.
    shunned by her family. after she finally made it out of the Vordenberg dungeon, she tried to return home. she was turned away and shunned and her family had no support to spare for a vampiric and mildly murderous daughter. since her father had sold her like prize cattle and her mother had never supported any interest that wasn't ladylike, mircalla doesn't think back on them with particular fondness.
    recruited by maman. the same goddess that raised her found her and pulled her into her fold. some of it was enjoyable, living a rich and explorative life and watching the passions and the tastes of the world change. she enjoyed the feeling of being powerful and the chance to explore things she'd never felt brave enough to when she lived. however, part of working with her mother required her playing the part of a lure for young girls that Lilita hand-selected for sacrifice. while she didn't kill them personally, she did feed on many of them, and manipulated them all. she never asked what happened to them until it was far too late.
    a bloody swath through history. during this time with Mattie and Maman, her viciousness and violence were not only allowed, but encouraged. she killed many and had little in her life to remind what how wrong it was. in fact it was something that she put together much later.
    loved and lost. after about 100 years of chasing marks for her mother, eventually Carmilla fell for one. she made plans to run away with Elle to New York, to see the newly-opened metropolitan museum of art and escape the caging expectations of both of them. however, she had never confessed her vampirism to Elle and when her Maman hinted her undead state to her lover, Elle betrayed her and condemned her for her vampirism and turned her over to the woman that Carmilla was attempting desperately to save them both from.
    bloody interment. as punishment for her betrayal, Lilita made sure Carmilla knew that Elle would die because of her and then buried her in a coffin of blood to drown eternally with her regrets. she was buried for decades and only got out during WW2.
    forced service. once her mother rediscovered her, there was little choice in returning to her service. however, the tides had certainly turned and Carmilla no longer enjoyed a spot at Lilita's right hand. their relationship is controlling and abusive and she reacts accordingly. she was unable to say no for fear of what her mother might do.
    quiet annoyance. she wasn't able to obviously rebel, however, she fought back in the ways she could. she tried to figure out her mothers plans, to destroy them. she would send girls back to families and different schools and different futures, instead of letting them be taken by her mother. however, Lilita had plenty of other vampires in her service, and while Carmilla saved a few, in the end other girls still got sacrificed.
    intentional disinterest. she has been burned all too many times by caring too much and feeling for things that end up temporary. thusly, she tries to present a visage of nonchalance and uncaring. it isn't necessarily accurate, but she tries. it takes a great deal to work her up and she avoids being attached to things.
    centuries of self hatred. while she enjoyed the first few decades of her undead afterlife, she soon came to hate herself and what she was quite viscerally. specifically after Elle's betrayal and the fact that because she was vampiric none of their time together mattered anymore, though that hatred has been plenty cultivated by time and awareness of exactly how horrible she is. she knows she's done terrible things and she doesn't expect forgiveness from anyone, much less herself.
    expectation of violence. her reaction to things is frequently to destroy them or murder them if they are a threat to her. that comes much in part by her years with her mother, and while these days usually she only kills for the sake of self-preservation, sometimes old habits die hard and she leans into those responses as they are much easier than trying to talk it out and feel things.
